Loki, the god of deceit
LOKI
Loki |
Loki is known as the creator of tricks and he could take any
form, that is, it is a change-forms and in different stories appears in the
form of salmon, mare, seal, fly and as an old woman.
Loki's relationship with the gods varies according to the
source. Loki sometimes attends the gods and sometimes acts wickedly towards
them
Loki had three important children: Jormungandr, Hel and
Fenrir.
Some of the stories that include it are the following:
Sleipner, it has eight legs |
Once they were going to build a wall around Asgard.
A giant called Hrimthurs was offered to build it in exchange
for the goddess Freya, plus the sun and the moon. The gods accepted as long as
the wall ended in 6 months, as Loki had advised them. The giant accepted on
condition that they let him use his horse Svadilfare. The project started and
moved forward very quickly. When the 6 months were about to be fulfilled, the
gods began to worry. They did not want to lose Freya, nor the sun and the moon,
and they demanded that Loki find a solution. Loki became a mare that distracted
the horse Svadilfare, without which the giant was unable to meet the deadline.
Then Loki gave birth to a horse with eight legs and gave it to Odin, who called
him Sleipner.
Another story says that Loki envied Balder, the mother of
this, enchanted him, so that nothing in the world could harm his beloved son,
nothing less the mistletoe.
Loki, who was very clever, disguised herself as an old woman
and managed to get Friggs (Balder's mother) to get the information she wanted.
Now that Loki already knew what Balder was not immune to, he waited at the
exact moment to assassinate him, in a way no one knew he was. Friggs, after
bewitching his son, challenged all the gods to throw any harmful object at
Balder, then Loki, drew an arrow of mistletoe, which he gave to the blind
brother of Balder, Höor. This one shot the arrow with a bow and his brother
died.
Loki and Sigyn picking up the venom of the snake. |
Loki also married Sigyn, and they had two children named
Narfi and Vali. In punishment mode for the death of Balder, the gods turned
Vali into a wolf and this, by not controlling himself, destroyed Narfi's
throat. In addition, the gods tied Loki to three rocks and placed a snake on
top of his head while it dripped poison. His wife Sigyn, picks up the poison of
the snake with a wooden bowl so that it does not fall to Loki, but when it has
to empty it, some drops fall to Loki, writhing in pain.
Loki will be unleashed on the Ragnarök.
