Yggdrasil, the world tree

YGGDRASIL

One of the most curious things in Norse mythology is that, unlike the others, it is divided into different worlds or kingdoms, specifically nine, which are sustained by the great tree, the YGGDRASIL.

The nine kingdoms are the following:

Helheim: kingdom of the dead, its equivalence to Greek mythology would be to the underworld, this kingdom is dominated by Hel.

Svartálfheim: kingdom of the dark elves or Svartálfar.

Alfheim: kingdom of the elves of light or Ljósálfar.

Niflheim: reign of terror, place where the wind does not flow and is uninhabited, only the dragon Níohöggr lives there.

Midgard: kingdom of human beings.

Asgard: kingdom of the Aesir.

Vanaheim: kingdom of the Vanir.

Muspelheim: kingdom of fire, inhabited by giants of fire like Surtur.

Jötunheim: kingdom of ice, inhabited by giants of ice as the father of the ice giants, Ymir.

In this tree several mythological deities inhabit, among them the dragon Níohöggr, that is in the roots of the tree, this dragon gnaws the roots driven by the messages of envy that transmits the squirrel that runs through the tree, Ratatöskr. The squirrel loves destruction, that is why he sends messages between Veorfölnir (hawk sitting between the eyes of a nameless eagle that remains in the crown of a tree) and Níohöggr.

It is also inhabited by four deer: Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Durabrór.
