Ratatöskr, the messenger squirrel
RATATÖSKR
Ratatöskr is a deity of Norse mythology, was responsible for
sending messages from one end of the Yggdrasil to another. Normally this
squirrel is related to the eagle Veorfölnir and the dragon Niohöggr, since it
communicated to the dragon what the eagle said and communicated to the eagle
what the dragon said, but he made up the messages in such a way that they would
get angry one another. It should be noted that the dragon lived on the roots of
the Yggdrasil and the eagle in the crown.
Some interpretations believe that the red squirrel
wants to destroy the tree, but having a very small size, manipulates the eagle
and the dragon to help destroy it, in this way, the enraged dragon gnaws the
roots of the tree so that the tree fall and crush the eagle, and this breaks
the branches of the cup with the intention that this branches fall on the top
of the dragon.
