Balder, the immortal
BALDER
Baldur |
Balder is fruit of the love of Friggs and Odin,
specifically, the second. He is an aesir, god of peace, light and forgiveness.
He was loved by everyone, something that Loki envied, Balder's mother,
enchanted him, so that nothing in the world could harm his beloved son, nothing
less mistletoe.
Loki, who was very clever, disguised herself as an old woman
and managed to extract from Friggs the information she wanted. Now that Loki
already knew what Balder was not immune to, he waited at the exact moment to
assassinate him, in a way no one knew he was. Friggs, after bewitching his son,
challenged all the gods to throw any harmful object at Balder, then Loki, made an arrow of mistletoe, which he gave to the blind brother of Balder, Höor. This
one shot the arrow with a bow and his brother died.
Höor |
The next day, Höor was killed, and Friggs, in a last attempt
to recover his son Balder, promised his favors to anyone who came down to
Helheim to ask Hel to give his son back his life. Finally Hermod got it and Hel
told him that if everyone cried for Balder, he would recover his life.
Unfortunately one person was the only one who did not cry, a giantess named
Thok.
Later the gods realized that the giantess was actually Loki
in disguise and the gods caught him and tied him to three rocks, and on top of
Loki, they tied a snake, which spewed poison.
After the Ragnarök, Balder and Höor will come back to life
and will be reconciled.
